Granma May 19, 2007 Discipline under scrutiny Parliamentary Economic Issues Commission devotes itself to the discussion. Maria Julia Mayoral
To rescue order will inevitably be a process and point of departure for greater productivity and efficiency. Its strategic nature compels us to consolidate millimeter by millimeter each success and to banish formalism and fanfare for progress. These realities guarantee the relevance of parliamentary hearings which took place yesterday, in the Palace of Conventions, by the Economics Commission of the National Assembly of Popular Power. Participants included Lina Pedraza, member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Party; Alfredo Morales Cartaya, Minister of Labor and Social Security; Salvador Valdes Mesa, Secretary General of the Workers Confederation of Cuba; Ernesto Suarez, Secretary of Parliament, as well as deputies, experts in economic matters, leaders of professional organizations, and representatives of bodies from the Central Administration of the state. Morales Cartaya recalled that, in Cuba, labor discipline is not gained through willpower or innate talent, although these may be necessary, as proven by recent resolutions 187 and 188. In our socialism, he emphasized, this attitude has to be the result of effective and conscious participation by the workers, through organization, persuasion, control and demand. Among the problems discussed in the meeting was the reticence still exhibited by workers and staff toward the necessary compliance with work discipline, time wasted during work, lack of organization, inadequate personal examples by administrative leaders, and insufficient information among citizens regarding readjustments in the schedules of state entities to facilitate procedures, purchases, and other formalities. Lina Pedraza reaffirmed that, for the Party, discipline's success constitutes a priority in its political work. We are updated, he said, on the people's opinions: one of the questions which preoccupies people is perseverance. They fear that over time standards fall and the actual requirements become a question of fashion. That cannot be allowed to occur. This process should be inculcated from the base, within the collectives, with everyone's participation, and in no case whatsoever should administrative focus be placed above the interests of society.
