Wishful thinking about the collapse of
the Cuban economy:
Wishful thinking. We've all experienced it and sometimes practiced it, haven't
we? We love to see things as we wish they were, especially if our wishes are out
of sync with the reality we confront every day. Those Cubans who left the island
in 1959 and 1960, figuring that Washington would go down there and clean up the
mess Castro was making, came to be bitterly disappointed. Few tears were shed in
some circles when JFK was assassinated, right?
Predicting the failure of the Cuban Revolution, the Cuban government, and the
Castro team has been an abiding pastime now for over half a century. It has
still never proven to be true, though - of course - a stopped clock IS right
twice a day. Some day it is possible - I wouldn't rule it out - that Fidel and
Raul might possibly die. You never know about these things.
But working for a bureaucracy, one learns to give the boss what she or he wants
to hear, and US diplomats who would tell their supervisors in Washington that
things aren't monstrously bad in Castrolandia is a sure-fire way to avoid such
unpleasant possibilities as being promoted.
The Cubans have many problems which are very profound. They can't blame all of
their problems on US policy, either. Still, these reports give no indication of
the role of US policy in limiting Cuba's economic and social development. But
that role is a significant one, and cannot be discounted as some would like to
do.
These elements are factors which should be kept in mind when reading the
Wikileaks revelations. They are a true reflection of the mindset of their
authors. Whether or not they truly reflect the reality which is being reported
on is quite another matter.
