An editorial in Espacio Laical*

Some persons, both Cuban and foreign, insist on asking important centers of power in the world to destabilize the Cuban government, to take steps that might fundamentally harm the people on the island and contribute to imposing on the country a socioeconomic and political model that has shown to have bright spots but also big shadows, without discerning and seriously coming to a consensus on how to attenuate the latter.

Many things in Cuba need to change, but the protagonists of those changes cannot be the centers of power in certain strong and influential countries. Many things in Cuba need to change, but everything indicates that most Cubans do not wish a change in the style of what happened in many Eastern European countries.

A huge majority of Cubans do not want the country to experience the fate of that part of the world or want our changes to occur through a methodology similar to the one applied there.

Certainly, we should be thankful that persons and institutions in other countries worry about the crisis we're undergoing, voice the criticism they consider pertinent, and offer counsel about how we should lead the nation to attain greater social, economic and political development.

However, a majority of the Cuban patriots, who abound in much of our present political diversity, hope that they do so as friends who accompany us, not as judges who condemn us or as conspirators who are ready to lead us toward uncertain fates that do not emanate from the express will of the people.

The latter might seem a utopia, because ideological, political and economic interests have always existed and will always exist, and perhaps people will never give up trying to impose them, by force or surreptitiously.

Nevertheless, it has been equally proven that persons and institutions have existed, and do exist, who are transparent and seek the participation of their own opinions and interests through an understanding and accord that offers stability to everyone.

On the other hand, for this to be possible, it becomes imperative to undergo a political evolution that is capable of broadening the process of aperture between Cubans with dissimilar patriotic thought.

It is necessary for us together, and with an intense participation by the people, to mold the current social model for the purpose of upgrading it to the existing demands of the nation as the real product of the general will, thus foiling others who – at some moment, taking advantage of specific circumstances – might impose a new model that responds to biased interests and even try to hijack the country.

To this end, it becomes obligatory for the official policy to continue to avoid rigidity. There may be, in fact, reasons that justify some inflexibility, but at this time in history a hardening of that rigidity might push the country toward the abyss.

It becomes inescapable for the State, the government and the Communist Party to allow themselves to be challenged by the new and patriotic opinions and projects that abound inside and outside their ranks, to be willing to give [such opinions] a leading role, to promote a synthesis of all those ideas and facilitate the redesign of our republic.

Senderos que se bifurcan

Algunas personas, tanto cubanas como extranjeras, insisten en pedirle a importantes centros de poder en el mundo que desestabilicen al gobierno cubano, tomen medidas que pueden daliar fundamentalmente al pueblo de la Isla, y contribuyan a imponer en el país un modelo socio-econ6mico-político que ha demostrado tener luces, pero también grandes sombras, sin discernir y consensuar seriamente la manera de atenuar estas últimas.

Cuba tiene muchísimo que cambiar, pero los protagonistas de esos cambios no pueden ser los centros de poder de ciertos países fuertes e influyentes. Cuba tiene muchísimo que cambiar, pero todo indica que la generalidad de los cubanos no desea un cambio al estilo del ocurrido en muchísimos países de Europa del Este. La inmensa mayoría de los cubanos no pretende que el país se enrumbe hacia el destino de esa parte del mundo, ni que nuestros cambios sean por medio de una metodología similar a la aplicada allí.

Ciertamente merece gratitud que personas e instituciones de otros países se preocupen por la crisis que padecemos, hagan las críticas que consideren pertinentes y brinden consejos acerca de c6mo deberíamos conducir la naci6n para conseguir un mayor desarrollo social, econ6mico y político. Sin embargo, la mayoría de los patriotas cubanos, que abundan en buena parte de nuestra actual diversidad política, anhelan que lo hagan actuando como amigos que nos acompanan y no como jueces que nos condenan, ni como conspiradores que estén dispuestos a llevarnos hacia destinos inciertos, que no emanen de la voluntad expresa del pueblo.

Esto último puede parecer una utopía, porque siempre han existido, y existirán, los intereses ideol6gicos, políticos y econ6micos; y tal vez jamás se renuncie a tratar de imponerlos, por la fuerza o subrepticiamente. No obstante, está comprobado igualmente que han existido y existen personas e instituciones que -sin renunciar a sus preferencias ideol6gicas, políticas y econ6micas- son transparentes y procuran que sus criterios e intereses participen por medio de un entendimiento y un acuerdo que ofrezca estabilidad a todos.

Por otro lado, para que esto sea posible se hace imperiosa una evoluci6n política que sea capaz de ampliar el proceso de apertura entre cubanos con pensamientos patri6ticos disímiles. Es necesario que juntos, y con una intensa participaci6n del pueblo, podamos cincelar el presente modelo social, con el prop6sito de adecuarlo a las demandas vigentes de la naci6n, sea un producto real de la voluntad general y se evite así que otros -en algún momento, aprovechando determinadas circunstancias- logren imponer un nuevo modelo que responda a intereses parciales y hasta puedan pretender secuestrar al país.

Para ello resulta obligatorio que la política oficial continúe evitando rigideces. Realmente pueden existir fundamentos que justifiquen ciertas inflexibilidades, pero a esta altura de la historia una hipertrofia de las rigideces puede precipitar al país hacia el abismo. Se hace ineludible que el Estado, el gobierno y el Partido Comunista, se dejen interpelar por los criterios y proyectos, nuevos y patri6ticos, que abundan dentro y fuera de sus filas, estén dispuestos a darles protagonismo, promuevan una síntesis de todas esas ideas, y faciliten el rediseno de nuestra República.
