AN INCONVENIENT DEMOCRACY FOR THE UNITED STATES

In Venezuela, the fact that it was expected and logical did not make the electoral victory of Nicolas Maduro for the presidency that had been vacant after the physical disappearance of head of state Hugo Chavez any less anguished.

In October 2012, the wide majority of Venezuelan citizens had chosen as their president the very popular leader of the Bolivarian revolution. Shortly before dying of cancer Hugo Chavez had recommended that his people vote for Maduro in the elections that, according to the constitution, had to be held in case of his death.

In the situation of bourgeois liberal order still prevailing in Venezuela, despite the country's strong leaning towards socialism, most government institutions operate within the restrictions of a system where finance capital continues to exert a powerful role in the manipulation of the mass media as well as in the economy and society as a whole. 

In Venezuela, 80% of the media are in the hands of an opposition that is composed of one of the richest bourgeois oligarchies in the planet.

The results of the electoral process of April 14 was surprising because of the narrow margin of 2% -barely 300 thousand votes- by which Nicolas Maduro obtained his victory over the candidate of the oligarchy, Enrique Capriles.

But it was indeed an unquestionable victory, especially because the voting system in place in Venezuela has great prestige and has been validated by hundreds of specialists from all over the world who have witnessed both its dependability and its transparency, due to its state-of-the-art automation and the accuracy of its results.

Among other authorities in the matter, the foundation sponsored by former U.S. president James Carter has observed that the electoral system in Venezuela is the most transparent and dependable in the world.

But it is also true that the media and terrorist machinery set in motion by the opposition to avert or reduce the margin of the popular victory, days before or during the voting process, was enormous. The campaign of power outages and the sabotage of the distribution of commodities to create virtual scarcities were effective in creating a measure of distress which resulted in absences at the electoral centers. 

When the National Electoral Council published the results of the 14 of April elections and the victory of Maduro, the losing candidate, who had been elected Governor in a Venezuelan province in October 2012 by a very narrow margin, refused to accept his defeat and called his followers to rise up. 

Such a scenario had been foreseen when, on March 16, 2013, Roberta Jackson,  Assistance U.S, Secretary of State, expressed her doubts on the transparency and safety of the Venezuelan electoral system. This was evidence that Washington already had a plan against the South American country based on not accepting the results of the April 14 electoral process.

Secret documents recently published by WikiLeaks show the extent of the U.S. government efforts against Venezuela. Through the  Stratfor and Canvas companies, fronts for intelligence and espionage, the CIA have been leading the actions of the Venezuelan opposition since 2006 and designed its campaign for the 2010 parliamentary elections.

The new documents revealed by WikiLeaks show Washington’s increasing anxiety at the role Venezuela plays in the alliances among the countries on the continent; a disproportionate interest in the energy, petrochemical and oil sector in particular; the links with Cuba, China, Russia and Iran; the state of its military forces and the situation of the counterrevolutionary forces.

The planned rage of reaction by an extremist sector of the opposition at the call of the defeated candidate; the attacks against public buildings and houses, factories and food distribution centers, medical assistance units and schools, public services and stores; while the losing candidate did not file a formal complaint before any administrative or judicial authority, indicate that Washington’s sponsorship of the alleged unrest was desperate and capable of provoking a major catastrophe in the continent and the world.

Mainly because this happens when many Venezuelans and Latin Americans, as well as scientists and specialists on politics from all over the world, keep alive with restrained indignation the question about the strange coincidence that so many leaders of countries and parties that refuse to accept the U.S. domination are being victims of cancer, and suspect that the infecting of the terrible disease to get rid of annoying adversaries is being used by Washington with the same nonchalance as drones.

ILA DEMOCRACIA QUE NO CONVIENE A WASHINGTON

No por esperado y lógico dejó de ser angustioso el triunfo de Nicolás Maduro en las elecciones para la presidencia de Venezuela, vacante por la desaparición física del Jefe del Estado Hugo Chávez.

Una amplia mayoría de los ciudadanos venezolanos habían elegido Presidente, en octubre de 2012, al inmensamente popular líder de la revolución bolivariana, quien poco antes de morir a consecuencia de un cáncer recomendó al pueblo sufragar por Maduro en los comicios que, por mandato constitucional, debían convocarse de ocurrir su deceso.

En las condiciones del orden liberal burgués que aún rige en Venezuela no obstante su pujante proyección hacia el socialismo, la mayor parte de las instituciones gubernamentales desempeñan sus papeles constreñidos por un sistema en el que el capital financiero no ha dejado de ejercer un fuerte papel manipulador de los medios de prensa, así como de la economía y la sociedad toda.

En Venezuela, el 80% de los medios está en manos de una oposición que representa básicamente de una de las oligarquías burguesas más acaudaladas del planeta.

Fue sorprendente el resultado del proceso electoral del 14 de abril por el margen tan estrecho con que obtuvo la victoria Nicolás Maduro sobre Henrique Capriles, el candidato de la oligarquía, algo menos del 2% de los votos emitidos, apenas unos 300 mil sufragios.

Pero fue, eso si, una victoria inobjetable, especialmente porque el método de votación venezolano actual goza de mucho prestigio y ha sido avalado por centenares de especialistas de todo el mundo que han apreciado su fiabilidad y limpieza por el alto grado de modernidad, automatización y exactitud de sus resultados.

Entre otras autoridades en la materia, la Fundación patrocinada por el expresidente estadounidense James Carter, ha apreciado que el sistema electoral de Venezuela es el más transparente y fiable del mundo. Pero también es cierto que la maquinaria mediática y terrorista que puso en funcionamiento la oposición para revertir o reducir el margen del triunfo popular en los días previos y durante el proceso de votación fue enorme. La campaña con apagones eléctricos por cortes de líneas y los sabotajes a la distribución de mercancías básicas para producir desabastecimientos aparentemente fueron capaces de provocar inconformidades que generaran inasistencia a las urnas.

Cuando el Poder Electoral emitió el resultado de las elecciones del 14 de abril que testimoniaba el triunfo de Maduro, el candidato perdedor, que incluso había sido electo gobernador de un estado venezolano en octubre de 2012 por muy escaso margen, se negó a reconocer la derrota y llamó a sus seguidores a la insurrección.

Esta posibilidad se había hecho previsible cuando el 16 de marzo de 2013, Roberta Jacobson, subsecretaria estadounidense de Estado, manifestó dudas acerca de la transparencia y seguridad del sistema electoral venezolano, evidencia de que ya Washington tenía un plan contra el país sudamericano basado en no reconocer los resultados electorales del 14 de abril.

Documentos secretos publicados por WikiLeaks en días recientes muestran la amplitud de los esfuerzos del gobierno de EE.UU. contra Venezuela. Mediante las empresas “Stratfor” y “Canvas”, fachadas suyas para labores de inteligencia y espionaje, la CIA ha venido dirigiendo las acciones de la oposición venezolana desde el 2006 y le diseñó su campaña para las elecciones parlamentarias del año 2010.

Los nuevos documentos revelados por WikiLeaks demuestran creciente desesperación en Washington por el papel de Venezuela en las alianzas entre los países del continente, desmedido interés en el sector de la energía, petroquímica y el petróleo en particular, las relaciones con Cuba, China, Rusia e Irán, el estado de las fuerzas militares y la situación de las fuerzas contrarrevolucionarias.

La rabia planificada con que reaccionó un sector extremista de la oposición al llamado del candidato derrotado, los ataques contra edificios públicos y de viviendas; fábricas y centros de distribución de alimentos; unidades de asistencia médica y escuelas; servicios públicos y comercios, sin que el candidato perdedor formulara reclamación ante alguna autoridad administrativa o jurisdiccional, indican que el patrocinio por Washington del supuesto descontento era desesperado y capaz de provocar una catástrofe mayúscula en el continente y el mundo.

Sobre todo porque ello ocurre cuando muchos venezolanos y latinoamericanos, así como politólogos y científicos del mundo, mantienen viva, con contenida indignación, una interrogante por la extraña coincidencia de que tantos dirigentes de países y partidos que se niegan a acatar la férula estadounidense estén siendo víctimas del cáncer y sospechan que la inoculación de la terrible enfermedad para deshacerse de adversarios incómodos esté siendo utilizada por Washington con el mismo desdén que los drones.
