Thank you, President Obama

As is traditional in the United States, the President—in this case, Nobel Peace Prize winner Barack Obama—issues a decree officially declaring the fourth Thursday of November as National Thanksgiving Day.  This year, Obama issued it on November 23.

I believe that it would be an interesting exercise to determine which citizens were truly able to give thanks for what they have achieved this year and which ones had a hard time coming up with something for which to be thankful.

I am sure that the top executives and largest shareholders in the banks and big companies that received 700 billion dollars should feel grateful to Obama.

 The grateful must surely also include the owners of the companies that form part of the arms industry—because, what with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the disputes with North Korea and the conflicts that have been developed between the Israelis and Palestinians, they’ve had lots of sales.  If the proposed sale of 120 billion dollars’ worth of arms to the Arab countries goes through, they’ll be more than grateful—they’ll be having a party.

Certainly, the companies that have signed contracts with the Department of Defense for placing “contractors” in various countries (I’m referring to the former Blackwater, now Xe Services) will thank Obama for having kept the business going.

I don’t doubt for a minute that the oil companies are very grateful for the help that Obama has given them, because war both needs oil and is waged for oil, which means a two-in-one benefit: while selling more, they get new deposits to exploit.  Thank you—thank you very much, President Obama.

The CIA, the Department of Homeland Security, USAID, NED and all the other agencies and mechanisms that are used for carrying out political subversion, interfering in the internal affairs of other countries and stepping up police repression in the United States must also feel very grateful.

The torturers in CIA-run prisons and in the prison at the Guantánamo Naval Base—who haven’t been punished for what they have done to prisoners violating the prisoners’ human and legal rights—will thank Obama, who hasn’t prosecuted them.

Those who nearly daily loose “drone” missiles against “suspect” groups, killing civilians in Pakistan and other countries, will thank Obama for the retrospective amnesty he signed so they couldn’t be judged for those crimes.

I could keep on citing characters of this ilk, who will surely be thanking the Nobel Peace Prize winner for the benefits received during the past year, but I would like to turn, now, to those who have nothing to thank him for.

The immigrants who enter the United States in hopes of finding work and economic betterment won’t thank Obama for how they are treated and for the laws that are being drawn up against them.

Members of the U.S. working class can’t thank Obama for the high level of unemployment that has been responsible for their woes for several months.

Nor do Afro-Americans, who had hoped that Obama would try to improve their economic and social situation, have anything to thank him for—far from it!

People living on pensions have less and less to be grateful for, because, while the cost of living continues to rise, their pension checks are no longer linked to it (as they had been under earlier administrations).

I seriously doubt that the close to 40 million people who are now subsisting under the poverty line want to thank Obama for anything.

Nor, I suspect, are those who’d placed high hopes in the health law very grateful, since the only ones who truly benefited from that law were the insurance companies.

I don’t think that the many who have been sent the dead bodies of relatives who were in the Armed Forces and were killed in Iraq or Afghanistan are grateful.

All those who couldn’t pay their mortgages and have lost their homes and savings because of the economic crisis and unemployment have nothing to be grateful for.

I am sure that the readers of this bulletin know of many other cases in which there is no cause for thanks.  The latest Congressional election clearly showed how many are grateful to Obama—and how many aren’t.

 		    
   

GRACIAS , PRESIDENTE OBAMA

Como es tradicional en Estados Unidos, el presidente, en este caso el Premio Nobel de la Paz, Barack Obama, emite una proclama para oficializar el cuarto jueves de noviembre como  Día Nacional de Acción de Gracias. Este año la emitió el día 23 de noviembre.

Considero que sería un ejercicio interesante determinar cuáles ciudadanos pudieran dar gracias por lo que han  logrado este año  y cuales difícilmente tendrían que agradecer algo.

No me cabe duda que los principales ejecutivos y accionistas de los bancos y grandes empresas que recibieron los 700,000 millones de dólares, deberían sentir cierto agradecimiento por Obama.

Dentro de los agradecidos seguramente estarán los propietarios de las empresas que forman parte de la industria armamentista, pues bastantes ventas han tenido con las guerras de Irak, Afganistán, las escaramuzas con Corea del Norte y los conflictos que se han desarrollado entre los israelitas y los palestinos.  Si se concreta la venta de los 120,000 millones de dólares en armas a los países árabes, más que las gracias deben dar una fiesta.

Seguramente que las empresas que han firmado contratos con el Departamento de Defensa para tener “contratistas” en distintos países, me refiero a la antigua Black Water, ahora Xe Services, le agradecerán a Obama que siguen en el negocio.

No dudo ni por un momento que los consorcios petroleros se sienten altamente agradecidos por la ayuda que Obama les ha brindado, pues la guerra necesita petróleo y se hace por el petróleo, en fin un doble beneficio, vendes más y recibes nuevos yacimientos que explotar. Gracias, Gracias mil, presidente Obama.

La CIA, el Departamento de Seguridad de la Patria, la USAID, la NED y toda la caterva de agencias y mecanismos utilizados para llevar a cabo la subversión política, la intromisión en los asuntos internos de otros países e incrementar la represión policial dentro de los propios Estados Unidos, no hay duda que tiene que dar las gracias.

Los torturadores de las cárceles de la CIA y la existente en la Base Naval de Guantánamo, a los que nada les ha sucedido por los maltratos a detenidos y violaciones a los derechos humanos y jurídicos de estos, agradecerán a Obama el que no los han enjuiciado.

Los que casi a diario disparan en Pakistán y otros países los cohetes de los “drones” contra grupos de “sospechosos”, regularmente formados por civiles, a los que causan la muerte, agradecerán a Obama la amnistía que firmó con carácter retroactivo para que no pudieran ser juzgados por esos crímenes.

Pudiera seguir citando personajes de similar calaña , que seguramente estarán dispuestos a dar gracias al Premio Nobel de la Paz por los beneficios recibidos durante el año que termina, sin embargo me gustaría pensar también en los que nada tienen que agradecerle.

Pudiéramos decir que los inmigrantes que entran en Estados Unidos buscando una esperanza de trabajo y mejora económica, no le agradecerán a Obama la forma en que son tratados y las leyes que se preparan contra ellos.

La clase obrera estadounidense no puede agradecerle a Obama el alto desempleo que sufre desde hace varios meses.

Los afro norteamericanos, que tenían las esperanzas puestas en Obama para tratar de mejorar su situación económica y social, tampoco tienen nada que agradecer, quizás todo lo contrario.

Los jubilados y pensionados, cada día tienen menos que agradecer, pues el costo de la vida continúa subiendo y sus cheques no suben como habían dispuesto administraciones anteriores.

La cantidad de personas que están viviendo por debajo de la línea de la pobreza, cerca de 40millones, dudo mucho que quieran agradecer algo a Obama.

Los que tenían puestas sus esperanzas en la Ley de Salud, creo que tampoco agradecerán mucho, pues los que verdaderamente se beneficiaron con ella fueron las empresas aseguradoras.

Los que reciben el cuerpo inerte de un familiar que perteneciendo a las fuerzas armadas  murió en Irak o Afganistán, no creo que se lo agradezcan.

Los que debido a la crisis económica y el desempleo han perdido la casa que tenían hipotecada y con ella los ahorros de muchos años de trabajo, no están como para agradecer nada.

Estoy seguro que cualquiera de los lectores de este boletín pudiera agregar unos cuantos casos en que nada hay que agradecer.  El mejor ejemplo de los que le dan las gracias a Obama y los que no se la dan, lo tuvo este con el resultado de las elecciones Congresionales.

En vez de “Thank you, Mr. Obama”, le han dicho “Sank you, Mr. Obama”.
