Rafael Correa, President of Ecuador, said he has proof of who was behind
the September 30 attempted coup. The guilty parties include Fidel
Araujo, who is close to former Ecuadoran President Lucio Gutiérrez.
In an interview for the international news department of the NTN 24
chain, whose headquarters are in Bogotá, Correa stated that U.S.
President Barack Obama “didn’t have anything to do with it.” However,
he said that “power groups” in the United States couldn’t be excluded,
for they may have intervened in the attempt to destabilize Ecuador’s
democratic Government.
He said that, even though the Government doesn’t have proof, there is
evidence that extreme right-wing “foundations” are financing groups
opposed to the Ecuadoran Government. “We have evidence of this. We
have bank accounts and records of money transfers,” he stated.
Concerning the tapes of police radio messages, the Head of State said
that some of the voices had already been identified but that, as a
security measure, their identity couldn’t be revealed while the
investigation was continuing.
“The revolt had very little to do with wage demands [by the police]. It
was a political conspiracy that made use of a hard core of policemen who
detest the Government,” Correa emphasized.
He reiterated that not all of the police took part in the mutiny; there
were exceptions, such as the Presidential security guard, whose members
risked their lives to save that of the Head of State. “Around 200 of
the 1000 policemen who rebelled wanted to do damage and attack me,” he
said.
In addition, the Head of State pointed out, “Everything [was] prepared.
We even have a witness whom they tried to pay to shoot the President for
them.”

El presidente de Ecuador, Rafael Correa, dijo que tiene pruebas para
acusar a los presuntos autores del frustrado golpe de Estado que sufrió
el pasado 30 de septiembre, entre ellos a Fidel Araujo, hombre cercano
al ex presidente ecuatoriano Lucio Gutiérrez.
En una entrevista concedida al espacio informativo internacional de la
cadena NTN 24, con sede en Bogotá, Correa aseveró que el presidente de
Estados Unidos, Barack Obama, “no tiene nada que ver en los hechos”, sin
embargo, dijo que no se puede excluir a “grupos de poder” de EEUU que
pudieron haber intervenido en el intento de desestabilización
democrática.
Aseguró que, aunque el Gobierno no tiene pruebas, si hay evidencias de
que supuestas fundaciones de extrema derecha financian a grupos
opositores al Gobierno ecuatoriano. “Eso sí tenemos. Tenemos cuentas y
plata que se ha transferido”, señaló.
Respecto a las grabaciones que se obtuvieron de la Radio Patrulla, el
Jefe de Estado manifestó que ya se han identificado algunas voces y que
por seguridad, mientras continúan las investigaciones, no puede revelar
su identidad.
“Las revueltas tuvieron muy poco que ver con reivindicaciones salariales
(de la Policía). Se trató de una conspiración política, donde se
aprovechó un núcleo duro que hay en la policía que detesta al gobierno”
resaltó Correa durante la conversación.
Reiteró también no todos los policías participaron en la asonada
golpista y que hay excepciones como los guardia de seguridad
presidencial que ofrendaron su vida por la del Jefe de Estado. “Dentro
de esos 1.000 policías sublevados habían unos 200 que querían hacer daño
y agredir”, manifestó.
Además, el mandatario recordó en la entrevista que “todo (estaba)
preparado, incluso tenemos un testigo que se le intentó pagar para que
le vaya a disparar al presidente por parte de esta gente”.
