Sánchez writes her articles from wi-fi networks in Cuban hotels

Famous for having received the well-paid Ortega y Gasset award that the
Group Prisa otherwise grants to experienced journalists, the Cuban
blogger Yoani Sánchez usually complains that she has no access to the
Internet and even claims that only through friends does she manage to
post her articles on the web.
On May 6, however, foreign journalists covering the International
Tourist Fair FITCUBA 09 who were attending a luncheon organized at
Havana’s Parque Central Hotel were in for a surprise: they spotted her
sitting in the lobby, working at her leisure on her own laptop and using
a wi-fi connection available in the hotel for some hard currency.
Thus she exposed herself to over 180 journalists accredited to the Fair,
unbothered by either State Security agents or people’s repudiation acts,
something she claims repeatedly to suffer from at all times.
There was shock and disappointment among some members of the foreign
press whose newspapers pay her for her writings, as they felt deceived
by her constant groaning and moaning about her difficulties to access
the web, so much so that they even doubted the truth of her words.
Yoani Sánchez’s items are published by a website called
www.desdecuba.com, which is not really located in Cuba: the server
is in Germany, registered under the name Josef Biechele and the company
Cronos AG Regensburg, often denounced by the Greens as a haven for
extreme right-wing and neo-Nazi groups, as the service provider. It’s
sponsored by IGFM –which received millions of dollars in grants from the
Bush administration– with the Anglo-Saxon Arnold Vaatz as one of its
spokespersons.
Yoani named her blog Generation Y, perhaps after Generation Yuma. (*)
(*) In Cuban
slang, the word Yuma is used by certain people in reference to
Americans (or things American). Such use dates back to the late 1960s or
so, when the old 1957 western 3:10 to Yuma was released, with
great success, in Cuban theaters. (T.N.).

La bloguera cubana Yoani
Sánchez, famosa por el premio Ortega y Gasset que le otorgó el
Grupo Prisa, bien remunerado y que suele darse a periodistas con
un mayor currículo profesional, suele denunciar en sus artículos
la falta de acceso que tiene a Internet, incluso afirmó que son
amistades las que consiguen mandar por la red sus artículos
manuscritos.
Pero cual sería la sorpresa cuando el miércoles 6 de Mayo, la
prensa internacional acreditada en la Feria Internacional de
Turismo de Cuba (Fitcuba 09), pudieron cruzarse con ella durante
el almuerzo preparado en el hotel NH Parque Central de La
Habana.
Con total tranquilidad
estaba sentada en el salón del recibidor con su ordenador
portátil y conectada a la red Wi Fi del hotel, el cual hay que
pagar en divisa extranjera.
Se expuso ante los más de 180 periodistas que están acreditados
a este evento, sin que nadie de la Seguridad del Estado la
molestara, ni sufrió ningún acto de repudio por parte de la
población, algo que ella denuncia en sus artículos que sufre
continuamente.
La sorpresa y la desilusión fue grande entre algunos
profesionales extranjeros cuyos periódicos le pagan por sus
colaboraciones, y se sintieron engañados por sus quejas y
lamentos ante la dificultad de acceso a Internet, llegando
incluso a cuestionarse la veracidad de sus escritos.
Yoani Sánchez escribe en
una página que se llama desdecuba.com, pero realmente no se hace
desde la Isla, sino que el servidor está alojado en Alemania y
registrado a nombre de Josef Biechele, el proveedor es la
empresa Cronos AG Regensburg, la cual también aloja páginas web
de ultraderecha y neonazis y que ha sido denunciada por Los
Verdes.
El patrocinador es IGFM
y tiene como uno de sus portavoces al sajón Arnold Vaatz, esta
empresa durante la administración Bush recibió millones de
dólares en ayudas.
Tal vez su blog se llama Generación Y, por generación Yuma.
