![]() Tuesday, November 22, 2005 Hip Hop In Havana by José Luis Estrada Betancourt
After several postponements for various reasons, the 11th edition of the Havana Hip Hop Festival 2005, sponsored by AHS and the Cuban Music Institute, will be opening tomorrow with a big concert at the Alamar Amphitheater and closing next Saturday. As has been the case for the past five years, the Tropical Ballrooms’ Pink Room will be added to its natural venue at said amphitheater in Habana del Este Municipality. At both places concerts will begin at 9:00 p.m., and the closing session will be held at the Tropical Ballrooms, animated by the musical groups that will have presented the most attractive and achieved performances. On this opportunity the festival will not be counting on international participants, but all three regions of Cuba will be represented, on the basis of a selection made by a jury at previous events at local level. Hence, the Eastern part of Cuba will be represented by the groups Tolerancia (Holguín province), Faraón (Guantánamo province) and Clase A (Las Tunas province). Elementos, Clase A and Asunto Serio from Villa Clara province; Bajo Fianza from Sancti Spíritus province, and Hermanos de Sangre from Ciego de Ávila province will be representing the central region, while the colors of the Eastern part of the country will be defended by the groups Insuperable and Concepto Real (from Havana province), together with Dos Veces Yo (from Pinar del Río provinve). Eighteen groups from the capital will be performing: among them, Doble Filo, Krudas, Anónimo Consejo and Los Paisanos. Starting tomorrow, the First Symposium on Cuban Hip Hop will open, to run simultaneously with the Festival, but only until Sunday, at the Plaza Municipality Culture House (Corner of streets Calzada and 8, Vedado), and this will complement the Havana Hip Hop 2005 by contributing a theoretical aspect. This is a project undertaken by La fabri_k, supported by the National Council of Culture Houses. Except for the opening session, that will be starting at 5:00 p.m. with the inauguration of a collective exhibit at the Avellaneda Hall of the National Theater, debates will begin since morning from Thursday on. At 8:30 p.m. groups will begin jam sessions. In the course of the Festival there will be workshops on the Cuban movement, hip hop culture (breakdance, graffiti, rap), social orientation, gender construction among other topics. Cuban as well as foreign scholars will dissertate and documentaries and videos will be screened. At the closing session awards and acknowledgements will be distributed. |
