service, and experience which has been slowly expanding. |
No one understood why the young woman burst into tears. It seemed that her pain came from deep inside. Only the teacher was able to console her. Now calm, she examined her body to confirm she had not been wounded.
She confessed later that the sound of the gunfire and proximity of the bullets had terrified her. Her cry erupted precisely when one of the bullets, still hot, grazed her...and she thought it had passed through her body.

That first round of practice on the firing range ended in dramatic fashion for soldier Dasmilia Toledo Cordero, one of 25 Young Communists League leaders who chose voluntary Military Service as a member of the Marianas platoon, as they like to call themselves.
Now the young woman tells her story with the satisfaction of having overcome this episode, even obtaining superior scores for her marksmanship.
We converse where the intense green of vegetation contrasts with the olive color of her uniform. It's graduation day for the Marianas platoon--which from this moment forms part of the reserves of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR). It's time to take inventory.
Dasmilia is 28 years old, and until this military course she was a preschool teacher at the Manuel Ascunce Primary School in the town of Guines. She left her career at the request of the UJC in her region, where she is now an official in the Department of General Affairs. She was selected among other volunteers to integrate into the officers group among the Youth who would do military service, only a few months after beginning her work with the UJC.
After the "preliminaries", as a soldier's basic training is commonly referred to, Dasmilia finished her Service in a large tank unit of the Eastern Army. There she was a political instructor, a responsibility chosen by each one of the Marianas in the distinct units of the FAR where they were stationed.
"From the first day I became a soldier, I performed all my duties, gaining the respect of those around me. My experience in the magistrate also helped me in my dealings with young soldiers and officials", she said.
I SUCCEEDED
Everything conspired against her. She suffered from asthma. Her skin was sensitive to insect bites and contact with vegetation: the melodrama of habitual scratching led to dermatitis. Also, for years she had been sedentary, and her office job reinforced her distance from physical exercise. She had many pounds of weight to spare. And her age...at 36 she was the oldest of the Marianas.

In spite of these inconveniences, Derys Elena Peregrino Tomas insisted in signing up for service. For eight years now she has been a professional officer in the UJC and is now an official in the Organization Department of its National Committee.
"In the first phase, there were moments when I thought I couldn't take it any more. All the time I had to wear full combat gear including boots and a 'zambran'. I had to carry a gas mask, a backpack, a AKM rifle, that one cannot leave even to go to the bathroom. It was difficult to climb aboard the ZIL truck with all that extra weight.
I forced myself to carry on until the end. In the marksmanship practice, we simulated an attack on the city, where we had to fire blanks at moving targets, and climb two-story high obstacles with small ladders. All this had to be done in a minimum of time and I did it. I succeeded at each phase with force of will. I know that the future of our Revolution depends on our defense readiness. Also, I made a promise to the UJC and the FAR and I just had to fulfill it", she said.
After completing the "preliminaries",
Derys was also placed in a large unit belonging to the Eastern Army.
"There my responsibilities doubled as political instructor among the
youth in the Unity organization. Our work consisted, among other things,
of supporting the work of the UJC, to make it more dynamic as a result
of our experience as leaders of the group".

"Military life is regimented so we consulted with the youth regarding the activities which they wanted to engage in. We listened to their proposals, and after reaching consensus, we organized them. On occasion we stayed up late into the evening immersed in these youth activities".
"On April 4th the communist base recognized 12 young people and before we graduated we were initiated into other learning processes".
This young woman from Las Tunas confessed she will miss the dynamics of the military, the new friendships and discussions with soldiers. The experience gave her a more complete perspective because she put herself in their place to understand their concerns.
During that stage, she will never forget the speech given by the Minister of the FAR, Raul Castro, in the 5th Plenary of the UJC, when he greeted and praised them for how pretty they looked dressed in olive green.
For her, the reflections of the Second Secretary of the Party, regarding the decreasing population in Cuba as a result of the low birth rate, proved decisive. On that day, the Ministry recounted a joke made in the 8th Congress of the UJC when he said to the young women: "You have to give birth, if not you will have to do Military Service yourselves". He said that to illustrate the magnitude of the situation.
She felt proud for having enlisted in the defense of the Nation, and understood that her efforts were being repaid, especially since Raul publicly recognized the bearing of her and her compatriots.
Debrys knows that the incorporation of women into the Service will occur slowly and she is happy that 75 other young women, also with political responsibilities in the UJC, have joined the FAR. They have decided to call themselves Celias and will promptly begin preparation for Defense.
Dasmilia and Derys, as well as the rest of the Marianas, return to their jobs familiar with weapons and the sound of gunfire. They understand attack and counterattack strategy, and at the smallest alarm, they will shoulder their weapons.

Luego confesó que le aterraban el sonido de los disparos y la cercanía con que le pasaban los casquillos de balas. Su llanto estalló precisamente cuando uno de estos, aún caliente, la rozó... y supuso que atravesaba su cuerpo.

Ahora la joven cuenta su historia, lo hace con la satisfacción de haber superado aquel episodio, tanto que hasta obtuvo calificaciones de sobresaliente en el tiro.
Conversamos donde el verde intenso de la vegetación contrasta con el color olivo de su uniforme. Es el día de graduación del pelotón de las Marianas —quienes desde este momento forman parte de la reserva de oficiales de las FAR. Es tiempo de recuento.
Dasmiliá tiene 28 años de edad y hasta el pasado curso fue maestra de preescolar de la Escuela Primaria Manuel Ascunce del municipio de Güines. Abandonó su profesión por solicitud de la UJC de su territorio donde ahora es funcionaria del Departamento de Asuntos Generales. Transcurridos pocos meses de su desempeño en esa responsabilidad, la joven quedó seleccionada entre otras voluntarias para integrar el grupo de cuadros de la Juventud que harían el Servicio Militar.
Luego de la «previa», como popularmente se conoce a la etapa de preparación básica del soldado, Dasmiliá cumplió el Servicio en una gran unidad de tanques del Ejército Occidental. Allí, fue instructora política, responsabilidad desempeñada por cada una de las Marianas en las distintas unidades de las FAR donde fueron ubicadas.
«Desde el primer día me integré como un soldado más, realizaba todas las labores, por eso me gané el respeto y la confianza de quienes me rodeaban. También mi experiencia en el magisterio me ayudó en el trato con los jóvenes soldados y oficiales», comenta.
LO LOGRÉ...
Todo conspiraba contra ella. Su padecimiento de asma. La sensibilidad de su piel a las picadas de insectos y al contacto con la hierba: el mero roce con esta suele causarle dermatitis. También desde hacía años estaba algo sedentaria, pues el trabajo de oficina la distanció de la práctica de ejercicios físicos. Le sobraban unas libras de peso. Y en edad... con sus 36 años es la mayor de las Marianas.

«En la primera etapa hubo momentos en que pensé que no podía. Todo el tiempo había que vestir de campaña incluidos las botas y el «zambrán». Había que cargar con la careta antigás, el portacargador, la pala del soldado y el fusil AKM, que no puedes abandonar ni para ir al baño. Fue difícil subirme a un camión ZIL con todo ese peso encima.
«Me esforzaba por no quedarme de última. En las clases de tiro escenificábamos un ataque a la ciudad, donde teníamos que disparar a blancos móviles y subir a construcciones de dos pisos por escaleras muy estrechas. Todo tenía que realizarse en un tiempo mínimo y lo logré. Así con mucha fuerza de voluntad fui venciendo cada etapa. Sé que de nuestra preparación para la defensa también depende el futuro de nuestra Revolución. Además, hice un compromiso con la Juventud y las FAR y tenía que cumplirlo», asegura.
Una vez concluida la «previa», a Derys la ubicaron en una gran unidad perteneciente también al Ejército Occidental.
«Allí doblé cargo con la instructora política juvenil de la Unidad. Nuestra labor consistió, entre otras cosas, en apoyar el trabajo de la UJC, hacerlo más dinámico a partir de nuestra experiencia como dirigentes de la organización.

«El 4 de Abril se les otorgó la militancia comunista a 12 jóvenes y antes de graduarnos dejamos iniciados otros procesos de crecimiento».
Esta joven tunera confiesa que echará de menos la dinámica militar, las nuevas amistades y hasta el trato con los soldados que la hicieron más comprensiva porque supo ponerse en el lugar de ellos y entender sus preocupaciones.
Durante esta etapa no olvidará la intervención del Ministro de las FAR, Raúl Castro, en el V Pleno de la UJC, cuando las felicitó y elogió por lo bonitas que se veían vestidas de verde olivo.
Para ella fueron decisivas las reflexiones del Segundo Secretario del Partido sobre el decrecimiento poblacional en Cuba como consecuencia de las bajas tasas de natalidad. Aquel día, el Ministro recordó la broma hecha en el VIII Congreso de la UJC cuando les dijo a las muchachas: «Tienen que parir, si no van a tener que pasar el Servicio Militar». Lo hizo para ilustrar la magnitud de la situación.
Entonces sintió tanto orgullo por haberse incorporado a la defensa de la Patria, comprendió que el esfuerzo se recompensaba, pues el propio Raúl reconocía públicamente la actitud de ella y sus compañeras.
Derys sabe que la inserción de las mujeres al Servicio será de forma paulatina y le agrada que otras 75 muchachas, también con responsabilidades políticas en la Juventud, se incorporen voluntariamente a las FAR. Ellas han decidido llamarse Celias y pronto comenzará su preparación para la Defensa.
Dasmiliá y Derys, al igual que el resto de las Marianas, vuelven a sus oficinas, ya no les resulta ajeno el manejo de las armas ni los sonidos de los disparos. Conocen de ataques, pero también de contraataques y, ante la menor alarma, empuñarán seguras su fusil.
